Our Story
Welcome to Our Family's Legacy: Authentic Yixing Pottery from its Heartland

Step into the world of Yixing pottery, a tradition our family has been immersed in for generations. We're honoured to bring you exceptional pieces directly from Yixing, a city nestled beside Lake Taihu in China's Jiangsu province, renowned since the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD) as the cradle of the world's finest purple clay (Zisha, ç´«ç ‚) stoneware.

The Soul of Yixing: The Unique Zisha Clay

What makes Yixing pottery truly special begins deep within the earth, specifically the Huanglongshan and Zhaozhuangshan mountains. Here lies the legendary Zisha clay – not a single type, but a family of clays including Zini (purple clay, rich in iron), Hongni (red clay, often yielding brighter tones), and Duanni (fortified clay, with varied composition and colour).

-
Technical Insight: These clays are unique mineral aggregates, containing high levels of iron oxide, along with quartz, mica, and crucially, very little kaolin compared to typical porcelain clays. This specific composition gives rise to remarkable properties:
-
Porosity ("Breathability"): After firing at high temperatures (typically 1100-1200°C), Yixing clay develops a distinctive porous structure, though it remains relatively impermeable to water. This "breathability" is particularly prized in teapots, as it allows the pot to interact subtly with the tea, gradually absorbing its oils and enhancing the flavour profile over time.
-
Thermal Stability: The dense structure resulting from high-temperature firing provides excellent thermal insulation, shielding sensitive root systems (especially crucial for bonsai) from abrupt temperature shifts – both summer heat and winter chill – thereby supporting stable and healthy plant growth cycles.
-
Breathability and Natural Aging: The inherent, unglazed porosity allows for essential air and moisture exchange with the root zone, preventing waterlogging and promoting root health. Over time, this surface interacts with water minerals and the environment, developing a unique, subtle patina that complements the plant. This natural aging, sometimes encouraging gentle moss growth, is highly valued in bonsai aesthetics for conveying a sense of weathered maturity and harmony.

Centuries of Handcrafted Tradition
The art of Yixing pottery truly flourished during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 AD), becoming intertwined with the rise of loose-leaf tea brewing and literati culture. Unlike much European pottery, which often relies on the potter's wheel, traditional Yixing pieces, especially teapots, are meticulously hand-built using a distinctive slab-building technique.
-
Craftsmanship: Our artisans, many following in the footsteps of generations before them, painstakingly shape slabs of prepared clay, join them, refine the form, and add intricate details entirely by hand. This demanding process requires years of dedicated practice and allows for unique, often sculptural forms that are difficult to achieve on a wheel. Each piece bears the subtle marks of the maker's hand and intention. The final firing process further transforms the clay, bringing out its final colour and character – a stage requiring immense skill and experience.
